soldiers entering the avenue to form an honor guard

At about 4:30 pm units of soldiers began to enter Constitution Avenue at various points. Spontaneous applause and cheering broke out at the appearance of each new group, as the people showed their support of our military. The columns marched down the avenue, a pair of soldiers splitting off every 30' or so to take their places along the route as a military Honor Guard. There were Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines visible from my vantage point. While the D.C. police were facing outward, toward the crowd, the military guard faced inward, at full attention, guarding the route the caisson would take.
